The Activity Hubs Master Plan (AHMP) is a strategic framework guiding the City of Mission’s parks, recreation, and public space development over the next decade and beyond. Spanning 19.6 hectares, including Centennial Park (8.6 ha), the Mission Leisure Centre, and École Mission Secondary School, the AHMP addresses the city’s rapid population growth and the increasing demand for high-quality parks, recreation, arts, and cultural spaces. With Mission’s population expected to double by 2030, the plan ensures that its public spaces evolve to support growing housing densities, increased recreational needs, and community well-being. This plan reflects a new era of parks and open space master planning, incorporating urban growth patterns, mobility trends, and extensive public engagement insights through surveys, feedback, reports and in-person meetings and presentations. It is scheduled for completion by March 2025 and aims to transform Mission’s regional parks into dynamic, multi-use destinations that serve both current and future generations. At the core of the AHMP is the integration of diverse land uses to create a network of vibrant, interconnected activity hubs. These hubs seamlessly link active recreation zones, natural areas, and community gathering spaces, ensuring accessibility and engagement for all users. The plan employs data-driven design, utilizing pedestrian and cyclist heat maps, topography assessments, landuse analysis, and connectivity studies to optimize the placement of amenities, pathways, and public spaces. The conclusion and implementation sections include phased approach to future development, categorizing improvements from high-priority, immediate needs to long-term strategies spanning ten years and beyond. This structured timeline ensures gradual and strategic enhancements, balancing short-term infrastructure upgrades with long-term ecological resilience, community integration, and service optimization. By prioritizing actions based on urgency, impact, and future growth projections, the plan guarantees efficient land use, sustainable resource allocation, and an adaptive framework for evolving community needs. The AHMP’s approach prioritizes a holistic, system-based vision that supports both passive and active recreation, fostering an inclusive, accessible, and adaptable park network. By maximizing connectivity between hubs, the plan strengthens Mission’s public realm, promotes active transportation, and enhances community life. This interconnected park system is designed to evolve with population growth, reinforcing Mission’s commitment to sustainability, health, and vibrant public spaces.
