Sanctuary at Horseshoe Bay is a 159 unit mixed-use development situated at the north-west corner of the Horseshoe Bay community adjacent the existing Sewell’s Marina. The project was conceived by the Sewell family to support their marina operations through development of an under-used surface parking lot. Paul Merrick worked closely with Dan Sewell and members of the community to develop a village of West Coast buildings distributed across the sloped site and nestled into the prominent hillside behind. The resulting collection of spaces and unique moments forms a bookend to Horseshoe Bay and aims to reinvigorate the community. The project incorporates a wide range of building types which move from a townhouse ‘front door’ along Nelson Avenue to taller volumes stacked against the hill and overlooking the harbour.
