The Vancouver project transforms four former pop-up plazas— Main & 14th, Cambie & 18th, Kamloops & Hastings, and Granville & 18th—into vibrant, permanent public spaces. Each plaza is carefully designed to include seating, greenery, bike lanes, and unique local features, creating inviting, community-centered destinations. Focusing on Main & 14th, located in the dynamic and trendy neighbourhood, this plaza becomes a permanent hub where streets close annually for a car-free day, encouraging social engagement and activating the vibrant experience. Year-round, it offers a place for respite with sustainable stormwater management, custom benches, and a microclimate enhanced by wood finishes or shade from trees. The design connects surrounding neighbourhoods, providing spaces for residents to relax, pass through, socialize, and engage in outdoor activities. By incorporating locally inspired elements, the design reflects the unique character of the Main Street area, fostering a strong sense of identity and belonging. Main & 14th has become a destination that not only serves the community but also celebrates its vibrant spirit. Plazas are designed in close collaboration with engineering disciplines with green infrastructure, utility coordination, servicing for festivals and lighting that supports CPTED.
